For your information, Petroleum and Chemical Engineering are new courses which was introduced inJuly, 2009, 19 of us were selected to do this courses. 10 students are taking petroleum Engineering study and the other 9 students are taking chemical Engineering Study.
So how is it feel to be the first batch to take this course ?
I can say that I am very proud of myself to be honored as among the first intake to take this course. However, at the same time, I cannot deny that I also feel insecure to be in this shoe - the genuine pig. Problems and issues may arise and may affect performance and the running of this programme. But Alhamdulilah, , so far the course run smoothly as what everyone is hoping. Two weeks ago I received my exam results which is the passport for me to proceed to the second year.
Petroleum and Chemical Engineering courses in ITB are an articulation programmes with University of New South Wales, Sydney (UNSW) where once we passed our first year in Institut Teknologi Brunei, we will commence to UNSW for another 3 years to proceed with our studies.
Articulation and tweening programme has two different meaning. For example in ITB, the Civil Engineering degree is a twinning programme with Queen's University Belfast, United Kingdom (QUB), The students will commence 2 years study in ITB and 1 year in QUB. The course pack and materials use in teaching CE in ITB is coming from Civil Engineering Department , QUB (where All the course details, standards, exam questions are following the QUB standard)
Whereas Petroleum and Chemical Engineering is an Articulation programme with UNSW, where the first year students in these courses will attend courses that is arrange/create by ITB itself. However to ensure we will not struggle at UNSW, ITB is trying to match all thePCE 1st year programme in ITB similar to what is being taught atUNSW but at the same time to include Brunei study in this program.
As a Petroleum Engineering student of ITB, I cannot deny it is a must for us to study the history of Oil and Gas in Brunei Darussalam as it necessary for us to know the history of oil & gas in Brunei. is it true that the first oil was found in 1929? and what is the current situation of oil industry in Brunei. All of this can inspire as well as to create a puzzle on mind what is going to happen to Oil and Gas industry in Brunei in the nearest future. I will cover that one in later to give a brief on how important is the exploration of Oil in Kampong Ayer Berkunchi (currently belief as Kampung Sumur- Source unverified) in the earliest exploration in Brunei.
