ITB & BSP Field Visit to rock outcrops of the Brunei Coastline

A group of first year Petroleum Engineering students from Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) spent a day enjoying a visit to some of Brunei’s excellent rock outcrops, courtesy of staff from Brunei Shell  Petroleum (BSP).  Dr Nick Hoggmascall, Head of Regional Geology led the group of nine students, currently completing their first year of studies, along with their lecturer, Md Mamum Azad.

First off was a visit to Meragang Beach, which according to the BSP staff exposes one of the best sections of rock outcrop along the Brunei Coast. There the students learned of the importance of understanding the geological controls on the production nature of the oil and gas reservoirs of of  shore Brunei. An excellent set of discussions and observations were made, with the students learning to take dip and strike measurements in the field courtesy of BSP Exploration Geologist Dina Hooijkaas.

The trip was reported in Salam Magazine :
The expedition was rounded off at Berakas Beach, where the students were led to a unique and important rock exposure where a boulder filled ancient river was observed along with fossilised tree trunks and beautiful entire compressions of rainforest tree leaves.

Back at ITB, copies of the ‘Geology and Mineral Resources of Brunei Darussalam’ were presented to the individual students on behalf of BSP. Commenting on the outing, Dr Hoggmascal said ‘I was particularly impressed by the students’ interest, participation and knowledge of the issues we discussed and I am sure they will excel further throughout their 4 year course’.

P/S : Thank You to Dr Nick Hoggmascall, Ms. Dina Hooijkaas and Mr. Md Mamum Azad for the trip. It was a great trip and we learnt a lot of new things from it which I believe is very useful and needed for our future career as Petroleum Engineering.
